A History
R Douglas Ashbee founded the business in 1947 initially creating the turning mechanism for the lipstick barrel and over time the business morphed into engraving.
Johnny Ashbee (his eldest son) took over the business on R Douglas’ death in the late 1950s, moving activities from Walton Road in Woking to the Goldsworth Road Industrial Estate where it stayed until the end of 2023, by which time the workshop unit was close to falling down (read on).
Being a family business, for many years Johnny’s daughter-in-law Joan had looked after the books and, on Johnny’s death in 1976 was left the business as the only one with enough knowledge to sell it. However, feeling a responsibility towards the dedicated members of staff (which, incredibly, included Pam and Gary who still work for the firm and are shareholders) decided to ‘carry on’.
In 1989, Joan’s middle daughter, Nikki, joined the firm as a trainee and after 30 years of being ‘trained’ took over the business; becoming the third generation of Ashbee to run the firm, which she has done ever since.
In 2023, Woking Borough Council finalised plans to redevelop the Industrial Estate so Nikki relocated the business to the brilliant Lansbury Estate in Knaphill.
In early 2025, Nikki decided it was the right time for her to hang up the keys to Ashbee and enjoy a well-earned retirement. Having known of Brunel Engraving for a number of years, she felt able to trust the Brunel brand to continue her excellent work and entrusted them to take continue the relations with the Ashbee customer database.
